County responds to residents' complaints

Two Marion County departments responded to complaints this past week of heavy traffic on Yarrow Road caused by U.S.-77 construction.

Complaints were made by residents who live on Yarrow Road to the county road and bridge and sheriff departments about rock haulers driving too fast and deterioration of the road by the traffic.

Haulers were transporting millings removed from U.S.-77 to an area on west U.S.-56. Yarrow Road is the only through road from Florence to K-150 and ultimately U.S.-56.

Sheriff Lee Becker reported Monday to Marion County Commission that sheriff's deputies had patrolled and monitored the traffic on the road. The speed limit is 55 mph with trucks being clocked at 45-50 mph, Becker said. He added that dust control also was a concern. When a passenger vehicle met a larger vehicle like a hauler, visibility was low and often required the passenger vehicle to stop until the dust settled.

Jim Herzet, acting superintendent of road and bridge department, told the commission motor grader operators also had been repairing the road damage caused by the heavy truck traffic.

Traffic should return to normal for now since hauling has been completed, Becker said.
