County supports Cottonwood expansion plans

Warren Kreutziger, owner of Canada Bait and Tackle, asked Marion County Commission Monday to write letters to legislators in support of a congressional ad that would fund the expansion of camp sites at Cottonwood Point at Marion Reservoir.

Kreutziger referred to an article that was printed in the Marion County Record regarding the county being ranked behind neighboring counties in tourism revenue.

The article stated the county had $8.4 million in revenue in 2006 but Chase County had $14 million, Harvey County $18.9 million, Dickinson County $28.6 million, and Butler County $60.2 million.

There are 100 new camp sites proposed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Cottonwood Point but funding is not available unless Congress approves more money.

The project could cost $5 million, Kreutziger said, and could be done in phases as funds are available.

A water line was installed last summer to the proposed new sites.

"Local businesses would benefit from this expansion," Kreutziger said, citing 100 additional camp sites could bring in 300 additional people per day.

The commission agreed it was a worthy project and agreed to write the necessary letters.

Kreutziger, who is a resident of Canada, an unincorporated community, requested the county repair blacktop within the community.
