Courthouse milestone theme for Old Settlers' Day

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Marion County Courthouse, this year's Old Settlers' Day theme is Marion County Courthouse: A Century of Service.

An open house and tours at the courthouse are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 and 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 30. Commemorative items will be for sale.

The Marion High School alumni reunion weekend begins Sept. 29 with a golf tournament at 11 a.m. at Marion Country Club.

The class of 1956 will sponsor a Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament from noon to 4:30 p.m. at Marion County Lake hall.

On Sept. 30, the annual 5k Old Settlers' Day Run will begin at 8 a.m. followed by a one-mile fun run. Both races are at Marion County Park and Lake. Register at Marion City Building.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. downtown on Main Street. To register, call (620) 382-2106.

Immediately following the parade, Marion Kiwanis Club will serve a picnic in Central Park. The menu is a beef burger sandwich or two hot dogs, chips, beans, pie, and drink for $6.

Games will follow at 1 p.m. Children and adults will enjoy participating and watching the traditional activities.

Marion High School band will perform at 2 p.m.

At 2:30 p.m., MHS alumni recognition will be held. The class of 1956 will host an all-school assembly and talent show. A drawing for $56 will be held at the conclusion of the assembly.

Other activities include an open house from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Marion Historical Museum, and photographs of master photographer Les Broadstreet's 70-year career will be on display from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Marion City Building basement.

MHS FFA mud run is at 3 p.m. Saturday at Green Acres Raceway. Admission is $2. Call (620) 382-3111 to register.

Historic tour of Marion County Park and Lake is at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Board the bus in the parking lot at Lakeshore Drive and Upland Road. Tour guide is Landon Leiker. Free-will donation will be used to purchase equipment for court games.

An outdoor, community-wide dance will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at Marion Country Club.
