Micayla Stika has a unique hobby. The 11-year-old sixth grader spends a lot of her time creating new items with a hook and yarn or thread.

That's right, Stika's hobby is crocheting.

Stika has been a member of 4-H for the past five years and has been crocheting for the past four. She also has been involved in sewing for one year, cross-stitch for four years, bucket calf for five years, market beef for one year, and foods for five years.

"My mom and aunt have done it (crocheted)," Stika said. "My aunt was in 4-H and when I go over there she crochets and I wanted to do it too."

Her time spent crocheting has paid off by being awarded ribbons at the Tri-County Fair as well as the Marion County Fair.

This is Stika's first year to be eligible at the state fair.

Her outlook for this year is that she hopes to do well. "It takes a lot of time. I want to get purple and go to the state fair. It's the highest you can go so I want to go to that one."

Stika's first project was a ponytail holder. After that, projects such as bracelets, bags, scarves, koozees, and potholders have been created.

She said one year at a birthday party she made crochet flip-flops for all of her friends. "I've done at least 20," she said.

She also has made several wreaths, probably about 30.

Stika's biggest project so far has been a denim and vanilla shawl. It took between five and six months to complete.

Her favorite item was a royal blue and lime green barrel bag purse that she made last year.

"It took me one day to make," said Stika. "And one hour the next day to put it together. I showed it at the Tri-County and Marion County fairs and got a purple at each.

"I plan to keep crocheting in the future," she said. "You can do a lot of different things with it."
