CVL 13-year-olds win district; compete at state years ago

Cottonwood Valley West all-star baseball team rolled through district play July 12-17 and won a game at the state tournament before ending its season with two losses.

The team, comprised of players throughout Marion County, defeated Golden Belt of Great Bend in the opening-round district game, 6-2, before losing to Mid-Kansas in the second round, 10-4.

Aaron Bina was named team MVP in the first round, and Ben Bebermeyer was the second round winner.

CVL bounced back in the third round with a 12-11 victory against Quivira, as Bina once again earned MVP honors. The team's bats came alive once again in the next two rounds, defeating Mid-Kansas twice, 18-7 and 22-5, to win the tournament. Ben Gardner was named championship MVP.

The victories earned the team a trip to Greensburg for the state tournament. The players checked in on Thursday, participated in opening ceremonies, then fell in the first game to Greensburg, 14-9. Cole Svoboda was the MVP.

Rustyn Kerbs led the way for CVL as MVP of the next game, a 7-4 victory against Mid-Kansas.

After a long run, the season came to an end for CVL in the next round after an 8-2 loss to Wellington. Tyler Schmidt was the final MVP winner for CVL.
