Cyrus Goertz

Cyrus H. Goertz, 82, died May 31, 2005, at Marion Manor.

Born June 6, 1922, in Grant County, Neb., he was the second of three children born to David and Mary (Northup) Goertz.

He attended Marion schools graduating from Marion High School in 1941. He attended McPherson College.

On Sept. 27, 1942, he married L.Dena Sampson at Marion.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of World War II where he was stationed in Okinawa and the Philippines. He was an active member of the American Legion, VFW, and was a Master Mason.

He was a longtime member of Youngtown United Methodist Church until it closed, then joined Eastmoor United Methodist Church. At Youngtown he was a youth fellowship leader, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, and member of the men's chorus.

Cy worked for Hassinger Plumbing and Heating while starting to farm in the Youngtown community. He farmed and raised Hereford cattle for more than 40 years. In retirement, he and L.Dena had a chair caning business.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sister, Rachel.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Clint Jost of Burdick; son and daughter-in-law, David and Jessye Goertz of Berwyn, Neb.; sister, Maryanna Scharenberg of Mapleton; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Saturday morning at Eastmoor United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Goering officiating.

Burial was in Canada Cemetery, rural Marion County.

Pianist was Shirley Bowers. Jim Hett sang "In a Land Where We Never Grow Old," and "One Day at a Time."

Casket bearers were John Jost, James Jost, Nick Weibert, Mike Davis, Dale Geis, and David Joe Scharenberg.

Honorary casket bearers were Rachel Goertz, Beth Weibert, and Tory Jost.

Memorial funds have been established with Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion Manor, or the Living Tree Memorial at Rock Springs Ranch.
