Dan Helmer

Former Marion resident Dan Helmer, 91, died May 31, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa, Okla.

Born Oct. 31, 1916, at Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, he was the son of Jacob and Hannah (Eberhardt) Helmer.

In 1929, his family immigrated from Canada to the United States and settled in Marion.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was a demolition specialist.

On Dec. 15, 1938, he married Frances Kelsey.

He was employed in the oil field business and they lived in Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. In the early 1980s, they retired to Marion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances; son, Laird; brothers, Jack, Ben, and Harry; sister, Rachel Keazer; and granddaughter, Shelly Helmer.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Stice of Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Marion Cemetery with Pastor Ron Long officiating.

A memorial fund has been established with the St. Francis Hospice at Tulsa, Okla., in care of Zeiner Funeral Home.
