Davidson is semi-finalist for national merit scholarship

Rachel Davidson, a senior at Marion High School, is a semi-finalist in the 2006 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Davidson will compete with 16,000 semi-finalists for 8,200 merit scholarship awards worth $33 million.

To be considered for a merit scholarship award, semi-finalists must have outstanding academic records through high school, be endorsed and recommended by school principals, and earn SAT scores that confirm students' earlier qualifying test performance.

Students and school officials must submit a detailed scholarship application which includes students' self-descriptive essay, and information about participation and leadership in school and community activities.

Three types of merit scholarship awards will be offered in 2006. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 national merit scholarships of $2,500 that will be awarded on a state representational basis.

Merit scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July.

Davidson is the daughter of Greg and Rose Davidson of Marion.
