Deputy rescues woman, children from flooded car

Michele Morales of Marion was southbound on Remington Road early Saturday morning with her two children, ages four and two, when her vehicle, a Ford Taurus, hydroplaned. The vehicle left the roadway and landed in a ditch.

According to Marion County Sheriff Lee Becker, when Morales got out of the vehicle, the water was waist deep and rising. She called Marion County dispatch at 5:34 a.m.

Marion County Sheriff Sgt. Jeff Soyez responded to the call, arriving at 5:37 a.m.

Becker said Soyez tied himself to his vehicle and rescued the woman and two children.

"I wish to commend Jeff on his quick response," Becker said.

Marion police officer Howard Kahler also assisted with the rescue, Becker said.

No one was injured in the incident. The vehicle sustained considerable water damage, Becker said.
