Disagreements can sometimes be good

Cheerleading still isn't a sport.

However, the letter to the editor from the Marion High School cheerleaders had some very valid points that made a lot of sense.

My column two weeks ago saying cheerleading is not a sport generated little buzz in my e-mail box.

I said the results of an unofficial poll of whether it was a sport would be published in the paper, and it appears half of the readers say it is, and the other half say it is not.

One vote for, one against.

The person saying it was not a sport asked to remain anonymous, and the vote saying it was, was from my recently turned 21-year-old sister who ended her e-mail with, "Once again Mike, you're wrong."

She still got her Christmas present.

While I won't concede it is a sport, I would like to apologize to all the county cheerleading squads who were left out of the Marion County Record winter sports preview. That had nothing to do with my opinion, and their pictures should have been printed in the issue. They put in a lot of hard work, and are a huge part of school spirit.

Forgetting to put them in the section is what stemmed the talk of whether or not it is a sport in my house. (I still say it's 2-1 not a sport because Mitch secretly told me he agreed with me.)

The main issue still remains, it doesn't matter what I think about cheerleading. If someone says it's a sport, in their mind it is, and vice versa.

Some debates will go on forever, and that is what makes the world an interesting place.

What makes it a better place is if at the end of the argument the two sides can go and grab some lunch.
