District vice president addresses local VFW auxiliary

Fourteen members of Ecker-Fulkerson-Slifer Ladies' Auxiliary of VFW Post #6958 met Sept. 13 for a regularly scheduled meeting at the post home.

The meeting was called to order by vice president Kay Steele.

Juanita Silhan was accepted as a new member. Seventy-eight women have paid their dues for the 2005-06 year.

Jerri McBride of Hope, 4th District senior vice president was present for the annual inspection of the auxiliary.

Community activities chairman Audrey McLinden collected volunteer hours for the past month.

Hospital chairman Lois Weber reported she is busy making lap robes and bibs. A box containing men's and women's clothing and 50 bibs had been sent to Fort Dodge Soldiers Home. St. Luke Living Center and Marion Manor each received 50 bibs and seven catheter bags. Marion Assisted Living received 50 bibs.

Bea Martinez reported pens, pocket-size notebooks, large notebooks, and magazines were taken to Topeka VA hospital.

Americanism chairman Joyce Richmond reminded members of POW-MIA Day on Sept. 16 and Gold Star Mother's Day Sept. 25. The auxiliary has one gold star mother, Ann Boese.

Buddy Poppy chairman Nicky Hoffman reported on the Buddy Poppy campaign on Labor Day at Florence. Volunteers were Hoffman, Donna Kreutziger, and Mary Ford.

The Marion campaign will be Old Settlers' Day, Sept. 24. Headquarters will be in front of Marion National Bank.

Rehabilitation chairman Mary Ford reported sending one get-well and five sympathy cards since the previous meeting.

It also was reported that Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy information had been made available for students at Marion schools.

The holiday bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 19 and will include a sandwich bar for hungry shoppers.

The auxiliary plans to present a new flag to Marion City Library.

The charter was draped in memory of Freda Losey.

Food items were collected for Hurricane Katrina victims.

Members were reminded October is cookie month. Each member is asked to bring three dozen cookies, candy, gum, or boxes of graham crackers, vanilla wafers, or snack crackers to an auxiliary member or the next meeting Oct. 11 at the post home. The items will be delivered to Colmery-O'Neill VA at Topeka.

A new prayer, "Prayer for Our Troops," was distributed to members. They were asked to share it with others.

The meeting closed according to ritual and with the National Home and POW-MIA prayers.

Fern Palmer and Tillie Schwendiman were hostesses for the social time.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at the post home. Hostesses will be Donna Kreutziger and Connie Rock.
