Do something good

Like most Americans, we take a lot of things for granted. When we turn the tap, we expect to get safe drinking water. When we flip the switch, we expect a light to come on. And, if we call the fire department, we expect them to show up.

We take these things for granted, yet we rarely stop to consider the how and why that makes these things happen.

Like most small towns, Marion's fire department is comprised of volunteers. These volunteers spend countless hours in education and training. They are able to do such a good job because of this training, and because they have adequate equipment.

At a recent fire call at the Rex Siebert home, Marion firefighters asked for and received assistance from Hillsboro Fire Department. With the help of Hillsboro's thermal imaging camera, firefighters were able to detect hot spots at the scene and put out the fire before it spread to the entire house.

The Sieberts are thankful for the skill of the Marion Fire Department and for the use of Hillsboro's camera.

This is one time when Marion needs to jump on the bandwagon. We've got experienced, well-trained, and dedicated firefighters. We should make sure they have the proper equipment to fight fires. If fire department personnel have determined the need for a thermal imaging camera is justified, then let's get one.

The fire department will accept donations for the camera. But wouldn't it be great if we could get the funds to do this without having a bunch of bake sales and other fund-raisers?

Old Settlers' Day is coming. Classes with excess funds in their treasuries might want to consider donations to the camera fund. Other old settlers might want to write a check as well.

What better way to give something back to the community than helping purchase a piece of equipment that may ultimately save a home — or a life?
