Donald Bird Sr.

Donald E. Bird, Sr., 71, of Ramona, died Aug. 2, 2006, at Salina Regional Health Center.

Born Sept. 2, 1934, at Nebraska City, Neb., he was the son of Kenneth and E. Fern (Cadle) Bird.

He retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service and served in both Korea and Vietnam. He worked for the Rock Island Railroad for 10 years.

On Oct. 2, 1956, he married Norma J. Whitlock at Springfield, Mo.

He was a member of Tampa American Legion and served as mayor and on the city council for the City of Ramona.

He was preceded in death by his son, Donald Bird Jr., in 2002, and his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Norma of Ramona; three daughters, Fern Leach of Ramona and Cindy Bird and Julie Bird, both of Herington; three brothers, Richard Bird of Hope, Bill Bird of Longview, Wash., and Howard Bird of Honolulu, Hawaii; two sisters, Ruth Ann Odom of Petal, Miss., and Nancy Slump of Parrish, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at Herington United Methodist Church with Pastor Roy Nelson officiating. Military honors concluded the service.

Inurnment will occur at a later date at Rosebank Cemetery.
