Dorothy Berg

Dorothy J. Berg, 77, of Newton, died Sept. 30, 2004, at Newton Medical Center.

Born Nov. 25, 1926, at Tampa, she was the daughter of Frank and Faye Smith.

She grew up in the Tampa and Marion areas and graduated from Tampa High School in 1944.

On March 9, 1946, she married Harold Berg in Newton. He died in 1996.

She worked at Phillips Industries and retired from Hesston Corporation in 1991. She also was a housewife and homemaker.

For more than 40 years she was an avid bowler and was a member of the Women's International Bowling Congress. She also was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Post 971.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; a daughter, Carol; a sister, Lola Burch; and a grandson, Dustin LeForce.

Survivors include two sons, David Berg of Bennington and Henry Berg of Newton; two daughters, Sherry Axsom of Lompoc, Calif., and Laura LeForce of Newton; two brothers, Richard Smith of Florence and Robert Smith of Marion; a sister, Mildred Riffel of Marion; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at Zeiner Funeral Home with the Rev. J.Ray Swearingen officiating.

Mike Flavin was soloist. Dolly Soyez was organist.

Casket bearers were Shot Hampton, Jason Diaz, Don Berg, Jason Yotter, Marvin Phillips Jr., and Roger Heaston.

Honorary casket bearers were LaVern Hein, Bob Berg, Tony Spencer, and Exxie Walker.

Burial was in Marion Cemetery.

Memorial funds have been established with the American Heart Association and the Kansas Dialysis Association.
