The daughter of Fred and Edith (Phillips) Collett, she was born March 8, 1906, on the family farm in the Elk Community northeast of Marion.

She attended Grapes School and graduated from Marion High School. She attended Emporia State University and took training to become a teacher.

She was a member of Youngtown United Methodist Church for 67 years until its closure, then transferred her membership to Eastmoor United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school, organized a mission band, and held offices in the United Methodist Women's organization

One of her desires in life was to learn to type. At the age of 80, she fulfilled that desire by enrolling in a typing class at Marion High School. At that time, she was the Youngtown correspondent for the Marion County Record and she was happy to finally type her news each week.

In the fall of 2003, failing health forced her to move from the family farm where she had lived for 97 years, to St. Luke Living Center.

Survivors include three sons, Leon of Topeka and John and Max of Marion; three daughters, Virginia Downing and Marilyn Geis of Marion and Carmen Parrack of Plano, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Eastmoor United Methodist Church.

Memorial funds have been established with St. Luke Living Center or Eastmoor United Methodist Church.
