Drinking water is safe but out of compliance

City of Marion water customers will receive a notice in their mail regarding a compliance issue.

City administrator David Mayfield told commissioners Monday the city's water is safe to drink but did not met EPA guidelines during the fourth quarter of 2004 as required by Kansas Department of Health & Environment. Notification to customers of the situation is required.

The letter states there is no immediate health risk.

A minimal upgrade at the city's water treatment plant would assist the city in being in compliance, Mayfield said. Long-term upgrades are being planned but to satisfy immediate needs, minor upgrades can be made.

City officials met with a representative from the Kansas Rural Water Association to discuss the minimal upgrades.

The city's engineers will submit a proposal to KDHE for the improvements.

When KDHE approves the proposal, the city will move forward with the upgrade, Mayfield said.

If customers have questions, they should contact the city office at (620) 382-3703.
