Christmas observances were a major topic of discussion Dec. 6 at Durham's city council meeting. Mayor Glennon Crowther reported buying a wreath and putting lights on it to hang at the shelter house in the park.

Plans were made for the Christmas in Durham celebration Saturday. Crowther said Jim Donahue had volunteered to lend his tram for rides around town. There will be refreshments in the community building and bags of treats for the children.

The mayor announced receiving of a letter from Mike Moran requesting a donation for the after-school programs sponsored by Communities in Schools. Gary Unruh moved to give $200 for this purpose. On a second from Verlin Sommerfeld, the motion carried.

The council went into executive session to discuss the possible acquisition of the bank building, but the matter was tabled until a later time.

Crowther reported about 30 chairs are missing from the community building. There was some discussion of replacement and a suggestion that various community organizations might be willing to help with the cost. No action was taken.

"We've still got problems with the lift station," Sommerfeld reported. There is a problem with the control system on the number one pump, so that it does not shut off. Sommerfeld had talked to a business which will look into repairing the problem. The water system pumped 399,300 gallons in November and sold 314,260 gallons for a 21.3 percent loss.

The mayor informed council he had sold the propane tank at the recently cleared lot to Duane Kaiser for $250. There also was some discussion of snow removal this winter and the need to fill potholes.

Among bills approved for payment were $69.79 dues to the Kansas League of Municipalities, $35 dues to the attorneys' association, and $371 for fill sand and the use of a skid loader for the sidewalk project.
