Durham High School alum retires after 40 years of federal civil service years ago
Marlin J. Miller, a Durham native, retired this week from employment with the U.S. District Court in Wichita after 40 years of federal civil service.
A retirement ceremony took place Monday in the ceremonial courtroom with the Honorable Monti L. Belot, U.S. District Judge, presiding.
Miller's family, including wife Nancy, daughter Kristi, and son Jared were present.
Also in attendance were his father LaVern Miller and sister Marlene Herzet, both of Hillsboro, and brother Norman Miller and sister Ruth Monares and husband Alfred, all of Newton.
Miller graduated from Durham High School in 1967 and joined the Kansas Air National Guard the following August.
After he had attended just one monthly drill meeting in December 1967, his unit, the 184th Tactical Fighter Group, was activated and deployed to South Korea. It was a response to the seizing of the USS Pueblo and crew by North Korea.
Miller was on active duty for 18 months, including 11 in South Korea.
After being released, he was employed for 12 years as a civil servant in the air operations section of Kansas Air National Guard.
He then served as courtroom deputy for Judges Wesley E. Brown and Patrick F. Kelly in the district court in Wichita.
After eight years with Judge Kelly, Miller was promoted to division manager of the U.S. District Court Clerk's office, where he served until his retirement.
