Dwight Beckham chosen as member of wind ensemble

Trumpeter Dwight Beckham of Marion County Park and Lake has been chosen to be a member of Wichita's first professional wind ensemble.

The newly formed ensemble is a concert band consisting of approximately 50 adult musicians.

Including both traditional and new literature, the repertoire will be played in four pairs of concerts during the first season.

The Saturday performances are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sept. 22, Nov. 3, Feb. 2, and March 29 in the Riney Fine Arts Center on the Friends University campus.

Judith Saxton, former principal trumpeter with the Wichita Symphony, will be featured as soloist.

Each concert will feature a guest conductor or guest soloist. Dr. Ray Cramer, former director of bands at Indiana University, will conduct the Nov. 3 concert.

The Sept. 22 program will be conducted by Dr. John W. Taylor of Friends University and will include: Festive Overture by Dmitri Shostakovich, Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre, Symphony in Bb by Paul Hindemith, Sound the Bells by John Williams, Trumpet Concerto by Alexander Arutunian, Bugler's Holiday by Leroy Anderson, and Bugles and Drums March by Edwin Franko Goldman.

Tickets may be purchased by calling (316) 201-1445 and can be held at the door. Tickets also may be purchased at the door.

Single concert price is $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Season tickets are $40 for adults and $32 for students and seniors.
