Edna May Ewert

Edna May Ewert, 101, died May 7, 2006, at Peabody.

Born July 14, 1904, on a farm near Aulne, she was the daughter of John A. and Anna O. (Welsh) Ewert.

When she was 10 years old, the family moved to farm west of Peabody. She attended Williams Rural School near Peabody, Blackwell High School, and graduated from Peabody High School.

Upon graduation, she taught at a rural school near Scott City to earn money for college.

She also worked grading papers for a professor at Southwestern College, Winfield, to earn money to put her bachelor's degree behind her.

She was talented, writing articles for the college newspapers, poetry which won many prizes, and plays which were given by the drama department.

Ewert taught school in Parsons, Las Cruces, N.M., Avonelle, Calif., American Falls, Idaho, and Idaho Falls, Idaho.

She earned a master's degree from the University of Kansas and was just a few hours short of earning he doctorate degree.

She was the drama coach for several schools and thoroughly enjoyed seeing her students win awards for their performances.

As the years passed, she wrote stories, plays, and poetry which was published.

She was a lifetime member of Kansas Author's Club, Business and Professional Women, and the United Methodist church. She loved to enter writing contests, winning trips and many things for her home.

Each summer she returned to her parents' farm, where she enjoyed all the farm animals and spending time with nieces and nephews.

Upon retirement from teaching in Idaho, she returned to Peabody. In 1970, the farm home was demolished by a tornado and Edna moved into an apartment in Peabody.

She soon was reporting news for the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin, working as a hostess for the museum, and active in the senior citizens' group.

The past few years have been spent at Legacy Park.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; and three brothers, John, Ralph, and Harold Ewert.

Survivors include a sister, Laura Slocombe of Peabody; sister-in-law, Doris Ewert of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Peabody United Methodist Church, Peabody, with Pastors Donna Friesen and Gene Ewert officiating.
