Edward O. Williams

Edward O. Williams, 89, died Oct. 26, 2005, at Kansas Veterans Home, Winfield.

Born April 30, 1916, at Brookville, he was the son of Ernest and Alta (Anderson) Williams.

He attended school in Minneapolis. When he was a teen-ager he quit school to work on the family farm.

After the farm was sold, the family moved to town and Ed moved to California to work. He joined the U.S. Marines and served in the South Pacific during World War II as a tank and truck mechanic.

After his tour of duty he returned to California to work as a mechanic in a logging forest.

In 1950 he married Laurel Austin. She died that same year.

He moved to Las Cruces, N.M. and on Feb. 12, 1954, he married Dovey Garrard.

The family moved to a farm east of Marion in 1967. He was employed at Marion Motor Center and continued farming. After the death of his wife Dovey in 1986, he moved to Marion. In 2000, he moved to Winfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; and a brother, Robert.

Survivors include two sons, Gary Williams of Marion and Steve Williams of Belle Plaine; a brother, Freelan Williams of West Palm Beach, Fla.; sister, Alta Mae Medley of Auburn, Calif.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion, with the Rev. David Branson officiating.

Casket bearers were Brandon Williams, Caleb Williams, Ryan Williams, Preston Williams, John K. Garrard, and John B. Garrard.

Burial with full military honors was in Marion Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established with Marion Central Park.
