Eight Centre athletes qualify for state track meet

J. Klenda places first in pole vault

At least eight Centre High School students who competed Friday in the 1A regional track meet at Madison qualified to participate in the state track meet this Friday and Saturday in Wichita.

The top four finishers in each event were state qualifiers. The competition included 27 schools.

Sophomore Jackie Klenda placed first in girls' pole vault with a jump of eight feet, which was identical to her league finish.

Another sophomore, Dani Hatfield, took second place in the 1600-meter run with a time of six minutes, 21.40 seconds. She took third in the 3200m run at 14:26.

Senior Aaron Barney finished second in long jump with a personal record of 21 feet, 1 1/2 inches. He finished third in triple jump with a leap of 41-7 1/4.

Junior Justin Garrard placed second in the 3200m run with a time of 10:32, and third in the 1600m run at 4:54.70.

Senior Todd Stahlecker placed third in the 800m run with a time of 2:10.50.

Senior Laura Klenda placed third in shot put with a throw of 33-1 1/2 and third in javelin at 107-9.

Senior Jill Fenske finished fourth in the 100m dash with a time of 13.50.

Senior Eric Peterson placed fourth in the 110m high hurdles with a time of 17.20.

Others who placed in the top six were Krista Heiser, 300m hurdles, fifth, 56.50, and the girls' 4x100m relay team of Jackie Klenda, Krista Heiser, Selena Seifert, Jill Fenske, sixth, 55.00.

Centre boys placed fifth overall, behind Burrton, Berean Academy, Lebo, and Madison.

Centre girls placed sixth overall, behind South Haven, St. Paul, Burrton, S. Coffey County, and Williamsburg.
