Although the numbers are small, Goessel coaches are hoping for a competitive season from the girls' team.

Aspen Frey and Kristen Hoffman, both sophomores, were competitors at the state meet last year.

Frey finished seventh in the 1600m race and Hoffman was eighth in the 3200m race.

Frey plans to experiment with several relay events and the 400m dash.

In addition to the 3200m race, Hoffman will check out the hurdle events and relays.

Two other girls are hoping to bring home medals during the season.

Junior Amy Brubaker will attack the long jump, triple jump, and relay events.

Aleesha Hines, senior, will participate in the throwing events.

"We are very excited for this year's track season," Guhr said. "The girls' team has several returning state qualifiers who will lead the team this year. We also have new faces."

The girls may not dominate many meets, but their performance against larger schools helps them measure their progress as they get to the end of the season when they compete only against 1A schools.

In the tough Heart of America League Remington, Berean, Bennington, and Moundridge are expected to lead the pack.
