Eighth-grade assignment turns into long-distance friendship

Staff reporter

Michelle Miesse and Katharina Mattheis, both 16, are two average teenagers who enjoy spending time with friends, going to movies, and just "hanging out."

The only difference is Michelle lives in Marion, and Katharina lives in Kiel, Germany.

After exchanging letters and photos for the past five years, the two teens finally met for the first time face-to-face two weeks ago when Katharina came to America.

"Writing to a pen pal started in eighth grade English class," Michelle said. Steve Janzen was her teacher. Michelle originally wrote Katharina's best friend.

"I read the letters and thought Michelle sounded nice," Katharina said. They shared common interests and began to write on a regular basis.

Katharina saved money from birthdays and confirmation to pay for the flight.

"My mother was worried about me traveling by myself," Katharina explained. Her 12-year-old sister was jealous that Katharina was going to America but her family supported her and she was allowed to make the trip.

Katharina arrived by plane at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. The car ride to Marion was an eye-opening experience for her.

"I was surprised with the amount of traffic and open spaces," Katharina said. She added Marion was similar in size her to her hometown.

Katharina said noticeable difference was the freedom American teens have — especially teens being able to drive.

"In Germany, teens mainly ride buses and bicycles," Katharina said. A driver's license isn't issued until a person is 18 and is expensive to acquire.

Michelle was enjoying spending time with her long distance friend.

"It's like having another friend with us," said Michelle. "We're just hanging out and doing what we always do."

Katharina said she has enjoyed meeting Michelle's friends and spending time with them.

"People here are more open to foreigners and strangers," Katharina said.

Michelle's family and Katharina went to Eureka Springs, Ark., for a family vacation this past week. They spent time sightseeing and stayed in a cabin which was a new experience for Katharina.

Both Michelle and Katharina will be seniors in high school this coming fall. They plan to continue being pen pals.

Michelle hopes to visit Katharina in Germany next summer.

"Maybe I can use my graduation money," Michelle said with a smile.

Michelle is the daughter of Scott and Laurie Miesse of rural Marion.
