Eighth grade boys start season with victory

Eric Vogel scored 19 points to lead the Marion Middle School eighth grade boys' team to a season opening 34-30 victory Thursday against Reno Valley.

Leading 11-10 at halftime, the Wildcats scored 23 points in the second half for the victory. Vogel had 11 points after the break, was 5-7 from the free throw line, and connected on seven shots from the field for the game.

Isaac Hett was Marion's next leading scorer with six. Adam Maag chipped in with four points, Brian Fruechting and Drew Maddox had two points each, and Brady Hudson had one point to give MMS a 1-0 record.

The seventh grade team had a harder time adjusting to middle school play, falling to Reno Valley 37-9. Dillon Richmond led the Wildcats with four points, Landon Leiker had three points, and Brandon Meierhoff had two.

MMS mixed team dropped its opener as well, 31-11.

The Wildcats played Monday against Centre, and play Monday at Halstead.
