Election results are official
Large number of write-ins require more time
Serving as a canvassing board, the Marion County Commission met Friday and again Monday afternoon, following the regular weekly meeting, to finalize general election results.
A large number of write-in votes, more than 750, were tallied which required more time for the election boards and commission.
Three positions received noticeably more write-in votes than others.
Incumbent Don Dahl, Kansas Representative District 70, was not formally challenged. However, there were 68 different names written, casting 176 votes.
Receiving the most write-in votes was Chester Roberts with 14, followed by Harry Bennett with 12, and David Mueller with 11.
Lee Becker, incumbent sheriff, also was unopposed. There were 53 different names, casting 133 votes. No one write-in candidate received more than five votes.
Incumbent attorney Susan Robson, also was unopposed. There were 28 different names, casting 113 votes.
Receiving the most write-in votes was Dan Baldwin with 15.
In 2000, there were four write-in names for the 70th district, six for sheriff, and two for attorney. There also was opposition for the three positions.
Votes are for Marion County totals only, but in most cases, the candidate receiving the most votes in Marion County also won in the larger areas.
Some township positions had the same number of votes for write-in candidates. A tie-breaker is scheduled for Monday during the regular county commission meeting.
