Elvis was in the building

Flashbulbs popped and the building rocked as Elvis made a birthday appearance Jan. 8 at Marion Senior Center.

Fans ranging in age from toddlers to 90 were treated to a full hour of Marc Baker impersonating Elvis with gyrating hips and songs of the '50s. He sang and strolled, draping the trademark Elvis scarf around a woman's neck.

The evening began with a birthday cake held by senior center manager Janet Bryant. Noreen Weems lit candles in honor of Elvis' 72nd birthday with almost-gone souvenir matches. Elvis (Baker) then blew out the candles.

Baker is a senior at West High School, Wichita. He has researched the life, music, and performances of Elvis in order to portray him authentically. He's been performing since he was 12, appearing all over the United States and winning Elvis impersonator contests. He plans to major in music at Friends University.

In other events throughout the day at the senior center, Elvis CDs were played and the center was decorated with Elvis memorabilia. A display of souvenirs and Elvis fan items were contributed from Weems, Virginia Downing, Bryant, and Eileen Sieger. Lanell Hett's framed Elvis puzzle also was on display.

Marion Senior Center folks were glad to welcome Baker so they could say at the end of the evening, "Elvis has left the building."
