Emil Backhus

Emil A. Backhus, 92, died Jan. 25, 2006, at his home in Herington.

Born Jan. 19, 1914, north of Tampa, he was the son of John G. and Helena J.F. (Ottensmeier) Backhus.

On April 7, 1940, he married Gladiola Kuhn at Lyons Creek. The couple lived near Tampa until 1945, when they moved to Hope. In 2000, they moved to Herington.

He was a farmer/stockman until his retirement in 1980.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Nunn; two brothers, Erwin Backhus and Adolph Backhus; and his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Gladiola of Herington; three sisters, Alma Meyer and Frieda Bentz, both of Tampa and Ella Heidemann of Decatur, Ill.; and five brothers, Robert Backhus and Wilbert Backhus, both of Tampa, Edwin Backhus of Hillsboro, Harry Backhus of Leavenworth, and John Backhus of Enterprise.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at St. John Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek, with the Rev. John Riebhoff officiating.

Burial was in St. John Lutheran Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established with the church.
