Excellence drives Goessel boys' track team

Nineteen boys are on the Goessel High School track squad this year, with the anticipation of regrouping for another successful season.
Last year, the boys' team finished second at state and first at the 1A regional meet.
Three state medalists return for the 2008 season.
Craig Banman brought home four medals from the state meet last year in pole vault, 300-meter hurdles, the 4x100m relay, and the 4x400m relay.
Travis Fensky earned a medal in the 4x100m relay at state and plans to run the sprints.
Weston Hiebert captured a medal in the 4x400m relay and plans to run the hurdle events with some other relays.
Cameron Stultz earned a letter last year and hopes to score points in the sprints, long jump, and relays.
Anthony Esau also earned a letter last year and plans to experiment with long jump and javelin and help with relays as needed.
Several additions to this year's squad excite the coaches.
"We have many new faces that we look to fill some holes left by the seniors who graduated last year," first year head coach Curtis Guhr said.
During the season, track meets often include larger schools which gives the athletes a good gauge of their times and distances.
Goessel competes in the Heart of America League with 12 schools ranging from 1A to 3A in size.
The regional meet consists only of 1A schools, and the state meet consists of only the top four in each event at regionals.
