Fall harvest is underway

With a few breaks now and then due to weather, the fall grain harvest is progressing slowly.

According to Mike Thomas, manager of Cooperative Grain and Supply in Marion, corn began coming in Sept. 15, and farmers are reporting yields of 120 to 170 bushels per acre.

He said soybean harvest is just beginning. The beans could have had one more good rain, he said, so a bumper crop isn't expected.

Milo yields are running about 100 bushels per acre.

According to Dale Klenda, an employee at Agri-Producers, Inc. in Lincolnville, receipts have been fluctuating as farmers seek out fields with dry grain.

Klenda said the facility has taken in more corn than average so far, with farmers reporting yields of 100 bushels or better per acre.

Milo yields reportedly are from 60-90 bushels per acre.

"The milo has been going down, so farmers are nervous about cutting it," Klenda said. "It came in wet at first but the last three or four days it has been mostly dry."

Farmers are somewhat disappointed with soybean yields, but beans are doing better than average so far, he said. Whether or not that will continue remains to be seen.
