Father/son team to coach boys' basketball at Centre

Centre USD 397 board of education approved employment of Gene Schafer Nov. 13 as assistant boys' basketball coach for the 2006-07 season. He will be working with his son, head coach Cody Schafer. He lives in rural Durham.

Cody is pursuing a degree in elementary education at Tabor College and has a teaching license which qualifies him for the coaching position.

The board accepted the resignation of Connie Gage, effective Nov. 13, as bus driver.

Dawn Kaiser was employed as concession manager for the remainder of the school year.

After a 20-minute executive session, the board voted to grant Superintendent/K-12 Principal Robert Kiblinger a raise in pay of 4.75 percent.

The board also approved purchase of a Ford Freestar from Hillsboro Ford for $16,899.

A request by Phil and Jamie Peterson to enroll a foreign exchange student at Centre High School for the spring semester was granted.

Kathy Bigler and Josh Callahan, representing the auditing firm of Clubine & Retelle, reported no instances of noncompliance and no budget violations during the previous year.

The board approved an audit contract of $4,070 for the current year.

FFA students Dallas Spooner, Brandy Kaiser, and Nellie Hill and adviser Gaea Wimmer presented information regarding several recent contests in which they did well.

Kiblinger announced that Allison Burnett and Roberta Brubaker will graduate at the end of the semester.

Before adjourning, the board discussed school finances and the need for improved facilities for the Marion County Special Education Cooperative.

Clark Davis, special ed representative, said board members from all five school districts have been asked to meet on the third Wednesday in January at Florence headquarters to discuss the issue.
