Fire dept. to get 'Cadillac' model thermal camera

Generosity from local residents, organizations, and businesses have afforded Marion Fire Department to order a higher-dollar thermal imaging camera.

Fire chief Mike Regnier reported Monday to Marion City Council that $9,980 was collected from a fund-raiser and local donations. He said his department would like to purchase a camera for $11,600, which would be "state of the art."

"It has all the bells and whistles," said David Mayfield, city administrator.

The department lacked $1,620 to be able to purchase the more expensive camera.

Mayfield said the city had saved $25,000 by purchasing a new trash truck early, so there were sufficient funds in the equipment reserve fund.

With that, the council approved giving the fire department the necessary funds for the "Cadillac" model camera.

Regnier said the camera had a wider screen, digital readout, and was "top of the line."

To date, the department has responded to 70 fire calls this year.

"I believe the volunteer firefighters deserve the best," Bill Holdeman said.

Regnier said additional donations are welcome and will be used for other necessary equipment.

The camera will be received in two weeks.
