LETTERS:   Fireworks are for July 4 years ago

To the Editor:

Although I do not enjoy fireworks and find the noise really unsettling, I do recognize that many citizens look forward to this time of year. I also think the birth of our nation is reason to celebrate.

However, on June 27, I see no reason for my dog to shake and pant uncontrollably. June 28 also appears as a blank on my calendar as far as a national holiday as do June 29 and 30. July 1 is Canada Day, but I don't believe that Americans setting off explosives is part of that tradition.

What is wrong with setting off fireworks on just July 4?

I understand that it might be more profitable to sell them at least one day ahead of time and any child buying fireworks is going to set them off, so I could even be generous enough to give two days, July 3 and 4, for the dangerous and loud activity.

Limiting the time fireworks are allowed in city limits would decrease risk of injury to people and property. It also would reduce the days and hours a fireworks booth would have to be manned and guarded. It certainly would increase the quality of life for pets and those citizens who do not enjoy living in a simulated war zone from morning to night for seven full days.

After a trip to the vet for medication, my little dog is still terrified. I have had to rent a spot at the reservoir where fireworks are banned and take up temporary residence in my camper with my dogs.

I believe there is some law regarding the expectation of a reasonable amount of peace and quiet inside one's own home. That certainly does not happen in Marion between June 27 and July 4.
