Staff reporter

A fireworks permit and license were approved by Marion City Commission Monday for Mary Carathers dba Mary's Enterprises of McPherson.

The fireworks stand will be located near Al's Home Repair at 147 W. Main Street. Marion Advancement Campaign will operate the business with proceeds benefiting MAC foundation.

City administrator David Mayfield said fire chief Thad Meierhoff had reported recent approval of a grant from Kansas Forest Services.

The funding was through the Cooperative Fire Protection Program in the amount of $2,261 with the city matching 50 percent for a total of $1,130.50. A 3,000-gallon drop tank and hose strainer will be purchased with the funds.

Mayfield also reported four of the six residents in the 100 block of Washington Street were contacted regarding curb, guttering, and paving. Residents indicated they want the project completed.

In other business:

— Public utilities director Harvey Sanders reported city crews were busy cleaning up following wind damage to trees. Some outages were caused by wind storms, Sanders said, but most have been caused by problems on Westar Energy's electrical distribution.

Trenching for new taxi-way lights at the municipal airport has stopped due to rain. The tie-down areas were installed. All but $1,300 of Kansas Department of Transportation aviation grant funds have been spent. The project came in under budget, said Mayfield.

— Police chief Michel Soyez reported he attended a homeland security grant meeting. Grant funds will be distributed to law enforcement agencies within the county. He said he did not know at this time the amount the city will receive.

— An electrical license was approved for Harms Electric Service.

— Warrants in the amount of $13,713 were approved.

— Commission acknowledged the receipt of a letter from Linda Ogden, executive director of Communities in Schools of Marion County. Ogden thanked the commission for its annual $1,000 contribution to the organization.

The next commission meeting will be at 4 p.m. Monday.
