Florence loses lake refuse contract

A contract for solid waste pickup of county-owned trash containers at Marion County Park and Lake was awarded Friday to the City of Marion.
Dale Snelling, lake director, presented three bids, from the City of Marion, the City of Florence, and Stutzman Refuse Disposal Inc. of Hutchinson, to the Marion County Commission.
The City of Florence previously provided the service and recently notified the county of a fee increase, prompting the need for bids.
Florence had provided the service since 1982 at a cost of $15,000 per year.
Once-a-week service for seven months and once-a-month service for five months for approximately 25 trash containers are specified under a three-year contract with possible fuel and solid waste adjustments.
Marion's bid per month was $3,892. Florence bid $4,100, and Stutzman bid $8,850.
In other business:
— The commissioners were told of another monthly increase in sales tax revenue.
May revenue totaled $46,550, an increase from $36,041 a year before.
A seven-month increase has netted the county an extra $42,500, County Clerk Carol Maggard reported.
— A fuel bid for the County Road and Bridge Department was approved. Cooperative Grain and Supply of Hillsboro had the winning bid of $8,342. Cardie Oil Company of Tampa presented a bid totaling $8,475.
— A bid of $3,096 for 360 gallons of 2, 4-D Amine for the County Noxious Weed Department was approved. Ag Service of Hillsboro will supply the chemical. Markley Service of Marion also presented a bid for $3,175.
— Maggard reported that most encumbrances for the year had been spent. The County Appraiser has an encumbrance of $6,100; emergency management, $2,500; and planning and zoning, $639.
The encumbrances were 2003 budget funds that were not spent.
— The commission approved $738,965 in payroll and vouchers.
Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Friday to canvass the votes from Tuesday's election.
The regular commission meeting will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the Courthouse.
