Florence plans community luau

Florence City Council, city employees, police officers, and swimming pool staff will host a free end-of-summer luau and pool party Saturday.

"Community volunteers have a done a good job helping the city in the past year or so," said Florence councilman Trayce Warner. "We've seen some attitudes turn around and people seem more excited about being a part of things. This is a fun way to say thank you to the community."

Warner was given a small budget by the city and received donations from businesses and individuals who wished to be a part of the celebration.

"We are going to roast a hog, have games with prizes, a free swim at the pool from 1 to 6 p.m., a terrific South Pacific buffet, and Hawaiian hula entertainment while we eat," said Warner.

The swimming, games, entertainment, and meal are all free. A drawing will take place at the end of the evening for a door prize.

"The only thing we ask is that people bring their own beach towel, blanket, or lawn chair," said Warner.

Gloria Ash, a Hawaiian who recently moved to Marion with her husband, has helped Warner pull together the decorations, food, and entertainment.

"Gloria will offer hula lessons beginning at 5 p.m.," said Warner. "Ash will perform the traditional Hawaiian wedding dance."

Warner encourages everyone to come out Saturday evening to enjoy being a part of Florence.

"This is the city's chance to say thanks for support and help from its citizens," she said. "We want everyone to come."
