Florentines hear about school project

Twenty-four senior citizens attended the Feb. 10 meeting at the Florentine Senior Center, Florence, to hear Marion-Florence USD 408 superintendent of schools Lee Leiker speak about the proposed $9 million school project.

Leiker said 34 percent of the funds would come from the state of Kansas. He said taxes would not change for the school district as some school bonds are about to be paid off and this project would replace that on the tax roll.

Lyle Leppke and Sarah Cope, board members of the school district, also were present with comments to the group.

Noreen Weems, director of Marion County Department for Elderly, was present to assist people with Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) and Homestead and Food Sales Tax.

Roger Giesbrecht volunteered to serve as president of Florentines. Betty Ireland will serve as vice president and secretary until someone volunteers for one of these positions.

Peter Banning gave the blessing before the meal. Secretary and treasurer reports were given.

Anne Britton has been hired as the cleaning lady for the center.

Bennie Holtsclaw will present the program for the March 3 meeting.

Commodities will be distributed from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. March 9 at the Florentines building.

Florentines will host the Senior Citizens of Marion County monthly meeting Friday.

Those in attendance included Leiker, Cope, Leppke, Banning, Weems, Geisbrecht, Ireland, LaDonna Geisbrecht, Janis Shanklin, Betty Inlow, Jean Everett, Lenore Smith, Bert Zogelman, Lenora Graham, Elsie Tittle, Mary Ducommen, Bob Gayle, Ella Leeds, Jeannie Meirowsky and grandson, Eli Riggs, Larry and Gayle Scriven, and Bud and Rose Vinduska.
