Focus on youth

With summer upon us, we're seeing a greater number of youngsters out on the streets of Marion. We're without a swimming pool this summer, so kids have to find other activities to keep them occupied during these long summer days.

Because there are so many kids on bicycles and scooters, it's a good time to remind everyone to be careful.

Drivers, slow down. Be careful when you see kids on bikes. They are darting across streets and through intersections without looking. Kids, watch for cars. Pay attention to the traffic — not all drivers see you.

It might be a good time for parents to sit down with their kids and go over bike safety rules. Bikers must obey the same laws as drivers when traveling on the streets — stop at stop signs, ride on the right side of the road, etc.

We all want our kids to be safe, so use common sense on the streets this summer.
