Food Check-Out Week is Jan. 29-Feb. 4 years ago

Food Check-Out Day, a designation that originated with Kansas Farm Bureau in 1997, is a national celebration. This year for the first time, a Food Check-Out Week will be observed. It begins Sunday.

The core message of Food Check-Out Day is: Food in America is affordable, thanks in large part to America's productive farmers and ranchers.

Feb. 2 is the day this year when the average American family will have earned enough income to pay for its annual food supply, including items purchased for preparation at home as well as food consumed away from home.

In contrast, Tax Freedom Day, when the average American earns enough to pay the year's tax requirements, is traditionally recognized in May.

Diane Meisinger, chairman of Marion County Farm Bureau Women, said several local activities are being planned to celebrate Food Check-Out Week.

A display will be set up at Vogts Hometown Foods in Hillsboro, and several books related to production of food will be donated to libraries in Marion, Hillsboro, and Peabody.
