Foursome will manage road and bridge department

Staff reporter

With the departure of the two top leaders of the county's largest department, Marion County Commission decided Friday to appoint four longtime employees to manage the road and bridge department until the positions are filled.

Beverly Cooper, Dennis Maggard, Tom Holub, and Gary Williams will oversee day-to-day operations until the public works director and road foreman positions are filled.

Former road foreman Steve Hudson resigned two weeks ago from his road and bridge position to accept the position as county lake superintendent, which he began June 26.

Less than a week later, former public works director Jim Herzet decided to retire from the county. His last day was Friday.

Currently the county is advertising for the positions.

Following two executive sessions for a total of 25 minutes with Herzet and the four employees, commission chairman Randy Dallke announced the four employees would act as lead people for the road and bridge department. With that the commission gave the four a permanent pay increase which would put them in the 88 percentile of median wage for their respective positions. The pay increase would be effective June 21.

The pay increases will be as follows: Cooper from $2,085 per month and $25,020 per year to $2,218 per month and $26,616 per year.

Maggard from $2,378 per month and $28,536 per year to $2,562 per month and $30,744 per year.

Holub from $2,489 per month and $29,868 per year to $2,830 per month and $33,960 per year.

Williams from $2,274 per month and $27,288 per year to $2,668 per month and $32,016 per year.

The foursome also will be asked to assist the new department head and assistant.

The road and bridge office will handle department complaints and concerns. Marion County Sheriff's Department will contact on-call personnel for emergency situations.
