The Father Kapaun Guild, headquartered in Wichita, recently bought three lots in Pilsen to pave the way for a retreat and visitor center.

The lots contained vacant houses which were demolished during the past week.

Parishioners of St. John Nepomucene Church spent at least two weeks cleaning out debris and removing windows from the houses, cutting down trees, and hauling off trash.

According to Rosemary Neuwirth, about 15-20 men showed up every day for a week to help with the work, and at least seven farm trucks were put into service.

Nowak Construction Co. provided a large trackhoe to demolish the buildings and deposit the debris in Dumpsters.

Neuwirth said the guild plans to move a donated house onto the property to serve various purposes, such as a retreat center and a museum housing Emil Kapaun artifacts and memorabilia.
