Freaky Friday brings another late blizzard

Just when Marion County residents thought the weather couldn't be any stranger, it happened again.

For the second Friday in a row, snowfalls in parts of Kansas, including Marion County broke former records. Previously, the National Weather Service in Wichita had April 12, 1957 and 1959 as the latest dates for snowfall. Now, April 13, 2007, will enter the record books.

With two to three inches of the wet snow came the usual traffic headaches with slush and ice on roadways and low visibility.

Marion County Sheriff Lee Becker reported numerous accidents in the county but none were serious.

Unfortunately in Chase County, Marion County Sheriff's Department assisted Kansas Highway Patrol and Chase County Sheriff's Department with a fatality collision that occurred on K-150, 10 miles east of Marion.

At 5:20 p.m. Friday, Jeris Louise Wunderlich, 26, Cottonwood Falls, was killed when her eastbound 2004 Chevrolet passenger car slid on ice and slush and was struck by a 1996 Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by Dale L. Tajchman, 39, Lincolnville. He was not injured.

Weather forecasters are predicting spring-like weather this week with temperatures in the 60s but residents are wondering if spring will ever arrive.
