From the sidelines

I'd like to try something new in this space every once in a while. So when there are a few things on my mind I feel like talking about, I'll share them with you.

It won't be a life-altering column, but then again, are any of mine?

— First off I need to apologize to Wildcats fans. Last week in this space I said their colors were purple and silver, when they are actually purple and GREY! Or as my K-State-grad sister Rachel points out: "It's purple and white according to the fight song." Sorry KSU fans, (but not too sorry).

— My son Mitch will be two years old Thursday. It's hard to imagine I have a child who is starting to function like an actual person. Especially considering I'm still sometimes working on that.

— If I talk about Mitch I can't leave out four-month-old Addie. It's obvious she is going to keep her older brother in line. When she's had enough of him being in her face she flails her arms and legs and lets out some kind of a yell.

Like a typical older brother he ignores her and keeps at it.

— For some reason I have a good feeling about Marion County fall sports.

It could just be that I'm glad to be back covering high school games, but something tells me good things are going to happen.

Athletes in this county work hard, take sports seriously, and want to win. That's good enough reason right there.

— Back in mid-June I mentioned how I had to trim some trees above my roof that were blocking the local channels from coming in.

It's late August and I haven't done it yet. And while I wish I could say catching up on worldly news is what is going to make me get up there and do it, it's actually the fact that "The Office" and "Lost" are right around the corner.

— Like just about every year, Marion County produced dozens of athletes now playing at the collegiate level.

It's always good to hear updates on how they are doing.

If you feel there are any county athletes who deserve some recognition for what they have done in college (on the field or in the classroom), send me some information to the e-mail below and I will recognize them here.

— Four of the five county high school principals, with Hillsboro being the exception, are new this year, which could mean a lot of change at your area school.

It doesn't necessarily mean it will be good or bad, but a new face in a leadership position almost will guarantee some changes.

— I love the summer and the sports it has to offer, but it just doesn't compare to school sports seasons.

I hope all the fall sports athletes have a great season.

Countdown to first football game: T-minus two days.
