From the sidelines

2:04 p.m. Thursday afternoon

As I'm typing this column all I can think about is the KU-Nebraska game I will be attending Saturday morning.

Yes, morning.

Of course it would have been a whole lot harder to get up and go to an 11:30 game when I was a student at Lawrence.

There are much more important issues in the world right now, but as a KU fan, this game is creeping toward to the top.

Forget the fact it's by far the best season the Jayhawks have had since I moved to Kansas in 1996.

It's their best season in 99 years.

I'll give you about 24 hours to let that one sink in.

OK, now you're back and ready for more thoughts on the 'Hawks.

And yes, I know there are a lot of K-State fans in Marion County, but you guys had your fun for nearly 15 straight years. Every Jayhawk fan on the planet has not experienced a start like the one the Crimson and Blue is currently having.

That being said, and I'm a little ashamed to admit, I'm nervous about the game.

Take a look at these facts:

— Nebraska is just 4-5 this season, and won only one Big XII game.

— The Huskers lost starting QB Sam Keller this past week, while junior backup Joe Ganz will make the start.

— The Jayhawks have out-rushed, scored more points, and accumulated more total yards than Nebraska this season.

All that, and I'm still nervous.

You see, when you don't win often it takes a lot to make believers out of fans.

Not to mention the fact Nebraska has won 37 of 38 against KU, the exception coming in 2005.

Sure, I admit I was wrong by doubting the team a little early on, but a lot of that was not wanting to jinx them. (OK, that's weird, but I can't help it.)

My better judgment, and the stats, tell me KU will win this game. My nerves say something entirely different.

Still, I'm going with my better judgment.

Jayhawks 41, Huskers 17.

1:22 p.m. Monday afternoon

OK, so I was a bit off. In fact I was way off from the 76-39 drubbing Kansas offered up, but the result was still the same.

It really was an amazing game. It has to go down as one of the most memorable regular season games in a long time for KU football.

KU basketball season starts tomorrow and you wouldn't even know it.

Even if the 'Hawks are to drop two of their final three games, they would be 10-2 and heading to a pretty good bowl game.

But you know what? Winning spoils you. As I was at the game I told my wife Jamie that if they lost I will be pretty mad.

Of course, before the season if someone told me KU would have been 8-1 I would have been ecstatic.

But like I said winning spoils you, and also can make you cocky.

I went from wanting to just win, to being a little upset they couldn't break 80.

That's why 10-2 is not good enough. A true fans wants their team to keep winning, and I think all KU fans should be thinking national championship now.

If not, hey, at least there's basketball season.
