From the sidelines

This column was going to be about Marion High School's performance of the musical, "Beauty and the Beast." However, between writing about going to KU football games and the Garth Brooks concert, this column could have its name changed to: "From the Crowd."

So, instead I will write about . . . oh forget it, I'm writing about the musical.

It was that good.

It might not have been perfect, but what is? Movies with multimillion dollar budgets still have scenes where you can see a mic at the top of the screen.

Plus, if I said I was perfect, lighting would strike me before I finished this sentence.

But once again director Janet Killough and her students wowed the crowd with great individual performances and group numbers.

The cast did a great job of singing and dancing on a stage that does not hold 20 singing and dancing teen-agers well.

The costumes were great, music fantastic, and the acting was better than a lot of movies in my DVD collection.

The students of MHS should be proud of the final performance at Marion City Auditorium.

The USD 408 performing arts center is scheduled to be completed Dec. 10, meaning next year's musical will be the first in the new and improved building.

But the stage held up well for three final performances this past weekend as a new era begins at MHS in 2008.

There are many memories I'm sure from the past 50-plus years of musicals, melodramas, and concerts performed on that stage.

The cast of "Beauty and the Beast" should know the final one will leave a lasting impression.
