From the sidelines

Winter sports begin

After a month of no high school sports, the Marion High School basketball season gets underway Friday night.

That means brawls, beer tossing, profanity, oh wait, wrong league.

That actually means basketball in it's (hopefully) pure state. Although, I do admit there's nothing like watching LeBron James throw down tomahawk dunks.

Back to high school now. The town has been a little quiet lately. Maybe it's because during the time I've been here my job always is more hectic during the season. But it seems there is a little bit of a buzz now that winter sports season almost is here.

Unless you live in Indiana however, that buzz is never as loud as the fall season. It's no doubt football overshadows most other high school sports. I haven't been here during a winter sports season, but I would guess the crowd support is still pretty good. Packing the Marion High gym for basketball games shouldn't be a problem.

What will be interesting is to see the turnout at wrestling matches. It's a sport where even parents who go to every match grimace each time their kid is slammed to the mat.

It's a hard sport to draw fans to outside maybe Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Iowa — mainly because most people don't understand how it works.

It's a guarantee if you go to a match it will be like nothing you've ever seen — even if you watch the WWE.

Fans or no fans, wrestlers give all they've got for six minutes on the mat.

Whether it's basketball or wrestling it should be a good season for Marion athletics.

Let the games begin.
