From the sidelines

I'm always trying to think of new ideas for the sports and school section to add more to the paper than just game reviews and grade point averages.

Some ideas have been popular, others have not.

With the Marion High School winter sports season just underway, we have come up with an idea, with the help of former MHS boys' basketball coach Marion Ogden, that will cover the inside and out of wrestling and basketball during the season.

Sure you are interested in how many points so-and-so scored, or how many pins this guy recorded, but have you ever wondered what constitutes a technical foul in basketball, or what it means when a wrestler scores "back points"?

Who is the girls' all-time leading point scorer at MHS? When did wrestling start at Marion? What does it mean when the ref takes both fists and bangs them against his hips while simultaneously blowing his whistle?

We are going to try to answer all those questions and give you information about MHS winter sports you never knew in our section: What's up with winter sports?

Throughout the year the sports section will contain articles on past players, features on current athletes, informational guides, and trivia questions about even the strangest rules and rituals of both wrestling and basketball.

If you have a suggestion for a topic, send an e-mail to mnorris817@yahoo.com, or call 620-382-2165.

If not, sit back and read about who won the game, who scored the most points, and maybe who wore their lucky socks all season.
