From the sidelines: It's time for sports

Now that everyone is back in the school and sports mode, it's time to talk about some changes being made in the sports and school section.

For starters, I finally have a new picture.

Considering I was 22 in my last one, and I just turned 26 (and gained about 20 pounds), it was time.

Also, you may have noticed the sports and school sections contain information on student-athletes throughout the entire county.

The coverage of your local schools will not change, instead it will be incorporated with the other schools in the county.

With that in mind, we are adding a sports page to the section that will be a preview to the upcoming week.

Down the left side of the preview page will be a list of the five county up-coming high school football games.

Each preview will have the teams' records and a short synopsis of what to look for during the game.

At the bottom of the page will be the "Gridiron Challenge."

Each week (excluding the Sept. 5 issue because I will be out of town) a group of chosen community members in the county will do their best to pick the winners of local high school games and certain college and NFL games.

Each issue will feature different "pickers" (this week county high school principals are participating), and the winner will be announced in the following issue.

It's just for fun, and while the winner does not receive a prize, he or she can at least gloat the rest of the football season.

The remaining section of the page will include stories leading up to the other sporting events such as cross country, volleyball, and tennis, giving you, as a reader, a different perspective of the events.

At times there may be a story of something that has already happened, but the goal will be to give you the most information ahead of time as possible.

Of course we still will have game results, stats, and opinions from coaches and players about the previous week's games as well.

Readers still are welcome to let us know about school and sports events, and we will do our best to cover them.

However, no matter how hard we work, mistakes will be made.

Some stories and pictures won't be able to make it in because of available space, unfortunately names will be misspelled, and some facts may be incorrect.

Feel free to let us know, and we will make corrections.

I'll start now.

Last week in this space I said the countdown was T-minus two days to the first football game.

Of course it was nine, but hey, at least now it's only two days.

We hope you enjoy our coverage of your local sports, and we will work hard to convey as much information as possible to you.

Enjoy the new school year.
