Brian Fruechting earned his second MVP award, and Heath Hill and Marshall Ragland knocked in two runs each, as the Cottonwood Valley 13-year-old All-Stars defeated Newton 10-0 Sunday to advance to state play.

The All-Stars will travel to Louisburg this weekend to play in the eight-team Babe Ruth state tournament.

CVL won all three games in the district tournament, hosted by the city of Marion, to advance.

Fruechting earned two-game MVPs and Tyler Ediger won the other with a complete game, five strikeout performance in a second-round match-up with Newton.

After a five-inning 14 strikeout performance Thursday earned Fruechting MVP in game one, he was at it again in the championship game.

After striking out two in the first inning, Fruechting blooped a two-run single into right field to get the scoring started.

CVL scored two more in the second on RBIs from Ragland and Ediger.

One more run came across for CVL in the third inning on a lead-off triple by shortstop Adam Maag. After crushing one over the right-fielder's head, he eventually scored on the play after an errant throw to third base.

After a scoreless fourth, Fruechting struck out two Newton batters in the fifth, before CVL finally put away the visitors in the bottom half of the inning.

After a run scored on a wild pitch, first baseman Jim Lauer singled home a run, and Ragland was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Hill, who had entered the game as a second baseman in the third inning, singled home two runs to end the game.

Fruechting finished with eight strikeouts, and yielded only one hit and three walks.

The total team effort in the tournament earned this group of boys their fourth straight Babe Ruth state tournament appearance. CVL will play its first game at 11 a.m. Friday.
