Fruechting, Wildin picked for All-Star game

Brian Fruechting and Cody Wildin of Marion were two of 36 players chosen for the ninth annual 15-year-old Babe Ruth All-Star Classic Sunday held at Elkhart.

Commissioners from the six Babe Ruth districts chose players for the team when they saw them play in their respective district tournaments.

Wildin and Fruechting were chosen as two of 18 players on the West team.

The teams practiced Saturday and attended a picnic for players and family members.

Although the West team lost both games of the double-header, the two from Marion contributed well.

Both had outstanding defensive plays, while Fruechting was 2-3 with a double and the tournament's only home run, and Wildin reached base three times via a walk.

The home run shot was over the right-center field fence, and was about 350 feet.

"It felt good, but I just kept running to first like you are supposed to," Fruechting said. "Then I heard everyone cheering and I looked up and saw it go over the fence."

The players enjoyed the entire experience.

"It was fun," Fruechting said. "Everyone got the same amount of playing time, and the coaches were really cool."
